Australian Digital Health Agency eLearning Courses and Hosting Guide

A suite of introductory courses developed with partner organisations for students and emerging healthcare professionals. Each course covers core concepts of My Health Record and how it is used in practice through short, context-specific modules.

These courses include:

• Digital Health in Aged Care: Understanding My Health Record (45 minutes): Developed in collaboration with TAFE NSW, this course provides aged care students with an overview of My Health Record and an understanding of how it can support improved outcomes for older people. The course also helps students build confidence in communicating to consumers about My Health Record.
• Digital Health in Healthcare: Understanding My Health Record (45 minutes): Developed in collaboration with the Digital Health CRC, this course introduces TAFE students and early-career healthcare professionals to key features of My Health Record and how it supports continuity of care in practice. The course increases students’ knowledge and awareness of My Health Record with practical insights into how it could support future job roles.
• Digital Health Foundations for Nursing & Midwifery: Competency Preparation for Placement (5 x 45 minute topics): Developed with La Trobe University, this course has been specifically developed for nursing and midwifery students to prepare them for clinical placement in digitally enabled healthcare environments.

The My Health Record eLearning courses help users understand how to access, use, and manage digital health information, supporting better-informed care and improved patient outcomes.

A suite of electronic prescriptions courses for different healthcare settings, covering key concepts of electronic prescribing and the Active Script List, and how electronic prescriptions are created, managed and dispensed. 

Explore how digital health can support safe, connected, and efficient pharmacy practice, including the use of key digital tools, systems, and communication solutions to enhance patient care.

• Transforming Healthcare Communication in the Digital Age (2.5 hours): Coming soon Developed by the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia in collaboration with the Agency, this course equips pharmacists to effectively use digital communication systems, best-practice documentation, and digital health tools such as My Health Record, electronic prescriptions, the Active Script List, and secure messaging. 

This series of courses support the safe use of digital health technologies, covering clinical safety principles, risk management, and governance across the digital health lifecycle.

These courses include: 

• Clinical Safety in Digital Health - Introductory (1.5 hours): This course introduces clinical safety principles for digital health use in Australia, providing practical tools to support safe and effective practice. Developed in partnership with the Australasian Institute of Digital Health (AIDH).
• Clinical Safety in Digital Health - Intermediate (7 x 45 minute topics): Structured across seven modules, this course builds practical skills in applying clinical safety principles, focusing on governance, risk management, and embedding safety across the digital health lifecycle. Developed in partnership with the Australasian Institute of Digital Health (AIDH).

A suite of courses designed to build cyber security awareness in digital health, covering common cyber risks, the protection of sensitive health information, and the safe use of digital systems in healthcare settings.

These courses include:

• Digital Health Security Awareness (1.75 hours): This course explains how to protect the confidentiality of health information through safe online practices, strong passwords, secure devices and networks, and effective management of security incidents and data breaches. 
  • Keeping you safe – An Introduction to Security Awareness (30 minutes): An abridged version of the Digital health security awareness course, this course provides a high-level introduction to cyber security awareness and key security principles. This course is not currently available on our public online learning platform. It is offered exclusively to partners who host Agency eLearning courses through their own LMS.
• Using Online Conferencing and Telehealth Technologies Securely (15 minutes): This course provides healthcare providers with an overview of secure telehealth use, including protecting health information, applying privacy practices, and setting up secure consultations.
• Cyber Security Considerations when Working Remotely or Working from Home (20 minutes): This course outlines key protocols and practical steps for healthcare providers working remotely, including protecting sensitive information, securing devices, and reducing cyber risks.

This series of courses supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health services to use My Health Record and related digital health technologies, covering system use, privacy and security requirements, and electronic prescribing.

These courses include: 

• Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Services – Introduction to My Health Record (25 minutes): Coming soon This course introduces the My Health Record system, the information it contains, how it supports safer and more connected community care delivery, and how to access the system within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health services.
• Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Services – Security, Privacy and Access (40 minutes): Coming soon This course is designed for healthcare providers and organisations working in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health settings and covers secure access to My Health Record, including registration, privacy, legal and policy requirements, and consumer controls that support the protection of health information.
• Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Services – Using My Health Record in Practice (40 minutes): Coming soon This course is designed for healthcare providers and organisations working in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health settings and explains how to use My Health Record in routine practice to support clinical decision making, improve client safety, and ensure continuity of care through accurate, high-quality information.
• Electronic Prescribing for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Services (60 minutes): This course introduces electronic prescribing and the Active Script List (ASL) in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health services, covering how electronic prescriptions are created and managed, the benefits for clients and healthcare providers, ASL functionality, and the security, policy and legislative requirements that support their safe and effective use.

This series of courses supports healthcare organisations to prepare for and use My Health Record, covering organisational readiness, registration requirements, implementation planning, and security and access policy obligations.

These courses include:

• Registering your Organisation for My Health Record (45 minutes): This course supports organisations to register for My Health Record, identify readiness gaps, plan for implementation, and understand obligations for ongoing participation in the system.
• Developing a My Health Record Security and Access Policy for your Organisation (30 minutes): Coming soon This course supports healthcare organisations to develop or update their My Health Record security and access policy.

Hosting Agency eLearning courses on your organisation’s LMS allows you to integrate nationally developed, free training directly into your existing learning environment, while maintaining visibility, control, and alignment with your workforce needs.

• Access free, nationally aligned training: Agency courses are provided at no cost and are developed to support digital health capability across the sector, allowing organisations to deliver high-quality training without course fees.
• Integrate training into existing learning pathways: Embed courses into onboarding, mandatory training, and professional development programs alongside your internal content for a more seamless learner experience.
• Track participation and support compliance: Monitor course enrolments and completions to support reporting, workforce compliance, and governance requirements.
• Align learning to organisational roles and priorities: Organisations can select and deliver courses relevant to their workforce roles, priorities, and structure.
• Centralise training management: Hosting courses within your LMS reduces reliance on external platforms and ensures all learning activity is managed and tracked in one place.

• Receive dedicated Agency support: Organisations are supported by a dedicated Agency team responsible for managing eLearning and SCORM file licensing arrangements. This team acts as a central point of contact for:
  • recommending course packages suited for organisational learning requirements
  • licence agreements and renewals
  • monthly reporting requirements
  • course updates and version control
  • general enquiries and ongoing support.

Hosting Agency eLearning courses on your organisation’s LMS is structured process, with support provided throughout.

The process to hosting eLearning courses on your LMS includes:

1. Establish a copyright licence agreement: To get started, a simple copyright licence agreement is established between the Agency and your organisation. This outlines the agreed terms of use, including the intended purpose of the courses, reporting requirements, and version control arrangements across the licence period.
2. Access to SCORM course files: Once the agreement is in place, the Agency provides SCORM files, which can be uploaded directly into your organisation’s LMS.
3. Ongoing maintenance requirements: Organisations are asked to provide basic usage data (such as enrolments and completions) and ensure courses are updated when new versions are made available.

Healthcare provider organisations participating in the My Health Record system are required to comply with legislative obligations under the My Health Records Act 2012 and My Health Records Rules 2026. This includes establishing, maintaining and enforcing a My Health Record Security and Access Policy, and ensuring it is communicated to all relevant staff.

Under Rule 21 of the My Health Records Rules 2026, the policy must address specific requirements, including ensuring that staff receive training on the appropriate and responsible use of the system, their legal obligations, and the consequences of breaching those obligations.

Each organisation is responsible for determining the training required for its workforce, and the most appropriate way to deliver that training, to meet its obligations under the legislation.

Hosting the Agency’s eLearning modules in your LMS is one way to support these requirements. A combination of Agency-developed modules can assist organisations to cover the key training topics outlined in the legislation, while enabling consistent delivery at scale and providing a clear record of completion to support ongoing participation obligations.
